In June 2019, the High Court in Botswana, southern Africa, overturned what the judge referred to as “discriminatory” laws criminalizing homosexuality. The move came after an anonymous plaintiff filed a motion challenging its so-called anti-sodomy laws in 2018. The government claimed the laws shouldn’t be overturned because they reflected society’s values in a country that the US recognizes as “one of the most stable economies in Africa.” Three judges disagreed, unanimously overturning the laws which they said violated Botswana’s constitution.
