Canada has taken in over 59,000 Syrian refugees since 2015 and though many of them still struggle to find work and settle in, their welcome in the country has been warmer than in many other places around the globe. According to the research done by the Canadian government’s Syrian Refugee Resettlement Initiative, “public interest in privately sponsoring refugees and volunteering with settlement organizations continues across Canada,” and many Canadian citizens have volunteered their own time to the effort to help refugees get settled in. The Canadian government has also provided extensive assistance, from housing to food to language classes, aimed at helping refugees become better integrated into their new homes. A recent survey indicated that the majority of refugees were happy with their new home and eager to begin working and contributing to their new communities. |
