Residents of Bo-Kaap in Cape Town, South Africa, fear that the rich heritage of its historic quarter is under threat from gentrification. Traditionally a Muslim area and boasting the country’s oldest mosque, Bo-Kaap was established by slaves from Asia in the mid-1700s. While it’s popular with tourists, and its pastel-colored buildings appear in numerous brochures, there have been continued protests against rising property rates and rampant building and expansion. Some locals say they can’t afford to live there and a youth movement called Bo-Kaap Rise! has sprung up to voice their animosity.
