Until 1996, dancing was banned at the world’s largest Baptist college, Baylor University. When President Robert Sloan Jr. lifted the ban, he warned students against pelvic gyrations, excessive closeness, or being obscene or provocative. No “Dirty Dancing,” was his edict to the 7,000-strong throng of students and alumni, before, according to the New York Times, he and his wife, Sue, “danced to a Beethoven minuet” before things got really wild and crazy and the couple shifted to a jitterbug “to approving howls and hoots from the crowd.”
