It’s strikingly beautiful, but from the outside, Iglesia de San Juan looks not unlike any other Catholic church in rural Mexico. Inside, however, statues of saints around the room are made conspicuous by the small mirrors they are holding, reflecting the sun from the skylight above. When the Spanish conquistadors imposed Catholicism on the indigenous populations in Mexico, some, like the Tzotzil people, managed to retain some of their religious traditions. Today, worshippers at Iglesia San Juan associate the sun with Jesus Christ.
