The first day of Chinese New Year (also known as Chinese Spring Festival) begins on the new moon between January 21st and February 20th. In 2019, that will be on February 5th. The holiday is responsible for the world’s largest annual migration—because of the vast distances some travel to be with loved ones. Hundreds of millions of people from mainland China travel during the festival period (compared to 100 million Americans who travel more than 50 miles during the Christmas holidays.)
Kung (or Gung) Hei Fat Choy is a Cantonese phrase used in some regions of China and well-known in the West as a New Year’s greeting for wishing happiness and prosperity.
