Paul Manafort’s now-infamous work as a political consultant for Ukrainian politician Viktor Yanukovych included bringing a slew of American-style campaign tactics to Yanukovych’s Party of Regions. But sometimes he went straight to the source: one prominent ad in 2006 appeared to show a blonde Ukrainian girl holding a yellow umbrella with the slogan “Stability and Prosperity.” It was actually a stock photograph of an American.
