AIA Austin COTE + AIAU: Component Sustainability Education Live Series
AIA Austin COTE is partnering with AIAU to bring you a four-part Component + Sustainability Education Live Series. The four sessions will showcase and facilitate discussions around some of AIAU’s premier sustainability content focused on materials, AIA 2030, health, and resiliency. Each session will offer a preview of an AIAU education series followed by a panel discussion with industry experts.
SESSION 1: MATERIALS MATTER
Series Overview: Material selection is a core service provided by architects, but that process is far from simple. The AIAU series, Materials Matter, untangles the complexities of that process. The key? Materials transparency. When you know everything you can about the materials you use, you’re able to make the best product decisions for projects, people, and the environment. The five courses in the series cover different types of impacts, and best practices for reducing these impacts, from industry-best instructors.
Materials Matter Course 1: Preview + Panel Discussion
April 15, 2021 at Noon, 1 LU/HSW
You wouldn’t buy a car without checking its gas mileage, so why wouldn’t you want to know what goes into your building? This session will give a preview of the first course, “The Big Idea”, which outlines the potential health and environmental impacts of the products that go into our buildings and explains key drivers pushing transparency in the marketplace. We will be joined by three esteemed panelists who will offer great insight into how they see the building materials industry changing how these changes apply in real practice.
Panelists:
Tori Wickard AIA, RID, LEED AP, Project Architect, Associate, Perkins&Will
Annie Bevan, Executive Director, Mindful Materials
Jen Wong, Materials Lab Director, University of Texas School of Architecture
SESSION 2: AIA 2030 CHALLENGE
Series Overview: The building sector is the single largest consumer of energy and producer of greenhouse gas emissions. The 2030 Challenge, adopted by the AIA, provides a path to reducing our sector’s negative impacts and reaching carbon neutral design as the standard practice. This series will inspire architects to meet the 2030 Challenge through design strategies, efficient technologies and systems, and applying renewable energy resources.
AIA 2030 Challenge Course 1—Goals and Design Processes
April 29, 2021 at Noon, 1 LU/HSW
The design process is an important element in the creation of next-generation buildings that meet the 2030 Challenge targets. This preview of the AIA+2030 Online Series, will explore the design processes to produce high-performance and carbon neutral buildings, including the Integrative Design Process (IDP). We will explore collaborative strategies that can achieve low energy outcomes, and how these strategies can be used as a roadmap throughout the design process. We will be joined by three panelists who are putting the AIA 2030 Commitment and low carbon design processes into practice. Their efforts are proof that this commitment is achievable across various firm sizes.
Panelists
Ryan Bollom, AIA, Principle, Low Design Office
Umesh Atre, LEED AP, WELL AP, Studio8
Jenny Heim, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, Studio8

SESSION 3: HEALTH & WELLNESS
Series Overview: Licensed architects and affiliated design professionals have a duty to protect the public’s health, safety, and welfare. As America’s healthcare expenses continue to rise and we rebuild post-pandemic, collaboration with public health professionals will be more critical than ever.
Health & Wellness Course 1: Designing for Health
May 13, 2021 at Noon
In this course, you will hear from architects and public health professionals about opportunities to influence population health directly and indirectly through design. We will explore the basics of public health as it relates to architecture and describe six approaches any designer can apply to any project to think more intentionally about health promotion. Gail Vittori joins us for a conversation on the evolving relationship between public health and architecture, integrating evidence-based design solutions to promote health and the importance of design for health in achieving environmental justice.

SESSION 4: RESILIENCE & ADAPTATION
Series Overview: Do you want to integrate resilience into the design services your firm offers? The Resilience and Adaptation series is your answer. This exclusive multi-course series covers mitigation, resilience and adaptation, technical design application, and design process application. Take all courses in the series to learn best practices for mitigating risk for hazards, shocks, and stresses and adapting to changing conditions.
Resilience + Adaptation Course 1—An Introduction
June 17, 2021 at Noon
Get started on the path to integrating resilient design services into your firm and engaging, in a meaningful way, in resilience conversations and efforts. This session is the fourth and final of our AIAU Series. It will introduce resilience and adaptation foundations and offer key data points that will help you develop as a knowledgeable resource on the topic, support your efforts to integrate resilient design services into your firm, and be equipped to participate in local and national resilience conversations and efforts. Part of the session will cover content from the AIA Resilience and Adaptation Online Series, a multi-course series that provides you with the tools and knowledge you need to design for resilience.
The AIA Resilience and Adaptation Online Series is developed by the AIA as part of the resilience and adaptation initiative. Registrants will be given access to introductory course materials for reference before and after the event.
We will be joined by three esteemed panelists and moderator, Miguel Walker with Positive Energy, to discuss the recent events in Texas related to Winter Storm Uri; what went wrong and how we move forward from here.
