Building a Gingerbread House

Suggested for K - 5th graders.

This activity will guide you to build a simple edible “gingerbread” house using graham crackers, icing, and your favorite candies. Download the handout below for step-by-step photo instruction. Younger children will need help from an adult to cut the graham cracker shapes.

Building a Gingerbread House

Materials:

  • 6 full sheets of graham crackers
  • royal icing, cookie icing, or cake frosting
  • optional decorations: red & green m&ms, gumdrops, pez,
  • mini candy canes, sprinkles/jimmies, twizzlers, gummies
  • cutting board
  • serrated knife
  • butter knife
  • hand mixer
  • mixing bowl

Step 1:  Using a serrated knife, saw the top of a graham cracker at a diagonal to make the GABLE end of the house. Repeat this step so you have 2 gable ends.

Step 2:  Spread a thin line of icing along the vertical edges of the graham cracker you just cut.

Step 3:  Place a graham cracker against the icing on each of the vertical sides, and attach the other gable end so all four walls are connected.

Step 4:  Spread a line of icing along the diagonal edges of the gable, and place 1 graham cracker on each side to form the roof.

Step 5: Spread a line of icing along the RIDGE.  Let the icing harden for 30 minutes.

Step 6: Decorate using your favorite candies. Use the icing like glue to help stick the candies to the graham crackers.
