Design Month Advocacy

Green Pastures event with AIA National guest Paul Mendelsohn generated some great conversations about public involvement and provides some insight into what we can bring to our next leadership retreat. We talked about bringing our Advocacy Survey respondents in for a November happy hour to listen to their ideas in person. Michael Cowan offered to help.   Stuart and Michael Hsu have been asked to meet with the City about a cost of services report that could impact the future fee structure for building permits.  Task force may be needed, but not necessarily led by AIA. RECA is vigilant in this area.   Commercial Design Standards recommendations are headed back to the AIA Board on the 17th of October before presentation to the City. Kit Johnson has been tapped by COA to facilitate.   We are kicking off a six-month “festival of ideas” to imagine possibilities for the block at 10th and Congress. Matt asked for a copy of the Old Bakery press release and who it went to.   Looking beyond the Austin x Design frenzy, we discussed how to determine if Design Month met our goals. After Design Month, we should assess how we promoted the value of architecture, the work of our members, and built connections between organizations. When planning events for next year, we discussed encouraging committees to have partners so that we strengthen these connections.
