Barley|Pfeiffer Architecture
BARLEY|PFEIFFER ARCHITECTURE has enjoyed success designing a select number of award-winning professional offices, recreational centers, restaurants, educational facilities, and fine custom residences throughout the United States. The firm is proud to be recognized nationally as pioneers in the environmentally responsive green building movement. A full-fledged commitment to this movement was the founding basis of the firm over two decades ago. They were “green” before there was such a term. Understanding that a structure can be built with minimal impact on natural resources, while not sacrificing beauty, supports our belief that one can live well while living green - and have fun doing it!
Their work has been published both in the United States and abroad in such diverse venues as the Washington Post, The New York Times, Fine Homebuilding, and Better Homes & Gardens magazine. Alan or Peter have been guests on National Public Radio, the HG-TV network, as well as on The Discovery Channel.
BPA was founded in 1989 by principals Alan K. Barley and Peter L. Pfeiffer. Bringing different strengths to design, Alan’s ability to hear what clients want and utilize innovative ideas to create elegant spaces, compliments Peter’s strong building science background and practical approach to the building process. Their core competitive advantage is the blending of high performance design with building science innovations.
BPA is a LEED certified firm that practices “green by design”. Believing that 90% of effective green building decisions happen in the first 10% of the design process supports the importance of regionally appropriate design decisions and building systems integration. Rather than simply making sustainable material choices BPA goes beyond the present green building paradigm to provide sustainable architecture by thought, not simply by checklist.
