Shoebox Architecture
Suggested for 2nd - 5th graders.
Create a bedroom in box!
Materials:
- shoebox of any size
- scrap pieces of cardboard from another box
- construction paper
- tape and/or glue
- safety scissors
- markers/crayons
- (optional) toy figurine
Step 1: Cut out the scale figure in the handout. You can personalize and draw on the scale figure before cutting it out. OR, use a toy figurine that measures about 2 ½” tall.
Step 2: Imagine that the shoebox will be a room within a house. On any colored paper, draw a rectangle door that is big enough for the scale figure. Cut and paste the rectangle on the inside of the room where you would like the door to be. HINT: Use a doorway you can stand in to get an idea of how big a door would be in relation to your human scale.
Step 3: Decide what type of flooring the room has. Cut out a piece of construction paper to fit in the bottom of the box and glue it down. If there is going smaller throw rug, then add that with the furniture.
Step 4: Build the furniture for the room out of cardboard. The furniture can be formed by bending, cutting and taping extra cardboard pieces. Scale the furniture to fit the size of the scale figure.
Step 5: Locate the windows. Take a look at window types in your house and neighborhood and decide on a style window to use. Once you’ve drawn and cut out your window, trace it and cut out an extra window for use on the exterior. Glue one of the windows to the inside of the room at a height that allows the scaled figure to see out of it.
