Making a Shelter

Suggested for K - 5th graders.

While you are stuck at home, you might be imagining you are somewhere else. Practice thinking about what kind of shelter you would need to live in different places. What would you need in a desert or in a forest? Using the templates attached, your goal is to draw a shelter that you could live in and that will protect you from the sun, wind, and rain.

Materials:

Step 1:  Start with using your imagination, pick a place you would want to visit and make a place for protection.

Step 2: Think about the answers to these questions:

  • What kind of roof will your shelter need to protect from the sun and rain?
  • What kind of walls could you make that will be able to keep out the climate?
  • How wide and tall will your shelter be?

Step 3: Draw what your shelter would look like in its environment. You can draw your own environment or download a template below.

Step 4: Show us what you made! Tag us on Instagram

Want to keep going?

  • Make a model of your shelter! Use household materials like toilet paper rolls, popsicle sticks, etc. and glue and tape to build the model. Hint: Use a paper plate as a base.
  • Make you shelter in real life! Build a fort using things around the house, such as pillows and blankets, that mimics the shelter you drew.
